This policy explains how [Registered business name] (“we”, “us”), operator of Life Captain, collects, uses and protects your personal data. It covers our Android app, our website, and our QR scan pages, and is written to meet the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act) and the Information Technology Act, 2000.

2. App permissions
- Location (including background): used only to send your live location during an active SOS or Safe Walk, for geofence alerts you set up, or for Family Circle if you opt in. It is never used for advertising.
- Microphone: used to record evidence during an SOS, and to detect your SOS keyword if you turn that on. Keyword detection runs entirely on your phone; audio is never sent to us unless an SOS starts.
- Camera: used to scan QR codes, and for SOS evidence and photos if you enable it.
- Notifications: used for alerts about scans, SOS and Safe Walk.
- Contacts (optional): used to pick emergency contacts from your phonebook. We upload only the contacts you choose.
- Phone (optional): used to dial 112 or your contact if you choose auto-dial.
- Accessibility service (optional): used only to detect your volume-button SOS pattern when the screen is off, if you choose that method. It does not read screen content.
3. How we protect data
- Phone numbers, contact names, addresses, medical details and messages are encrypted at rest (AES-256-GCM). Evidence files are encrypted with a separate key per file.
- All traffic uses HTTPS. Logins use OTP and short-lived tokens. Staff access needs two-factor authentication and is recorded in an audit log.
- A stranger who scans your tag sees only the fields you switched on.
4. Sharing
- Your emergency contacts, when you trigger an SOS, miss a Safe Walk check-in, or someone reports an emergency on your tag.
- Service providers who process data for us under contract: SMS (e.g. MSG91), push notifications (Google Firebase), masked calling (e.g. Exotel), payments (Razorpay), cloud hosting and storage, and Cloudflare (bot protection).
- Authorities, when required by a valid legal order, or when you ask us to share evidence with the police.
We do not sell or rent personal data, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
5. Retention
- SOS evidence is auto-deleted after your chosen period (default 90 days, adjustable).
- Location points are deleted together with the SOS or Safe Walk they belong to.
- Tag view logs are deleted after 1 year.
- Account data is kept until you delete your account.
- Invoices are kept for 8 years, as tax law requires.
6. Your rights
You can access, correct, download (Dashboard → Account → Download my data) or erase your data. To erase it, see Delete your account. You can withdraw consent for optional features at any time in settings. You may nominate a person to exercise your rights. If you are unhappy with our response, you can complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
7. Children
The app is for users aged 18 or above. Child and elderly tags are created by a parent or guardian, who gives consent on the person’s behalf. See Child safety standards.
8. Cookies
The website uses only essential cookies: a secure login session cookie, plus language and cart preferences stored in your browser. We use no advertising or tracking cookies.
